The interconnected challenges of climate change, water resource scarcity, and glacial melting pose severe risks to the livelihoods of vulnerable populations in Tajikistan and Central Asia. Rising global temperatures have accelerated the melting of glaciers in the Central Asia mountain ranges, which are critical sources of freshwater for the region. As glaciers recede, water availability becomes increasingly unpredictable, exacerbating water scarcity in a region already marked by arid conditions and fragile ecosystems.
These changes disproportionately impact rural communities, particularly marginalized groups that depend on agriculture for their subsistence. Women, children, and economically disadvantaged populations face heightened vulnerabilities due to limited adaptive capacity and access to resources. The compounded effects of climate-induced water shortages threaten food security, public health, and economic stability, highlighting the urgent need for regional cooperation, adaptive strategies, and sustainable water management to mitigate the adverse impacts on the most at-risk populations.
Considering the importance of the glaciers’ preservation in the development area in Tajikistan in 2025, UN in Tajikistan and partners plan to organize a Model UN conference dedicated to this topic. The event will be conducted prior to the International Conference on the Preservation of Glaciers to take place in Dushanbe at the end of May 2025. 80th anniversary of the UN to be marked in 2025 is another highlight of the Model UN conference.
Model United Nations Conference (Model UN or MUN) is a simulation that imitates the procedures of the United Nations finding solutions for real-world problems, done through an academic simulation of the UN procedure. The MUN simulation consists of negotiation, discussion, and lively debates, which is the cornerstone of UN activity. It aims to educate students about current world issues, international relations, diplomacy, and the United Nations agenda. Along with knowledge of the world we live in, participants will develop skills including public speaking, presentation, persuasion, situation analysis, research, and critical thinking and most of all problem-solving skills.
The DMUN Conference Dedicated to the International Year of Glaciers' Preservation will take place in April 2025. In this unique event participants will assume the roles of representatives from different countries and organizations. Participants will work collaboratively to draft resolutions and propose solutions to the challenges surrounding glacier protection and water resource management. Through this Model UN conference, delegates will engage in meaningful discussions, advocate for impactful policies, and contribute to shaping a collective response to one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.
• Raise awareness of participants about the critical importance of glaciers as freshwater resources and the severe impacts of climate change on their preservation.
• Develop Policy Recommendations: Draft actionable resolutions that outline strategies for mitigating glacier loss and addressing related environmental challenges.
• Encourage dialogue among participants about the role of local communities, especially youth, in glacier conservation and the management of freshwater resources.
• Provide participants with a platform to develop their diplomatic and negotiation skills through structured debates and discussions on glacier protection.
• Inspire participants to take what they learn back to their communities, promoting further advocacy and action for glacier conservation and climate resilience.
